Graduate Medical Education Teaching Awards 2017

The annual GME at Iowa awards were presented a couple weeks ago and Internal Medicine members made an excellent showing, receiving awards in every category.

GME Symposium SMOCK
Dr. Justin Smock, Clinical Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, received the Excellence in Clinical Coaching award for, according to the award’s description, “passionately apply(ing) enthusiasm for teaching excellence in clinical venues.” In their nomination of Dr. Smock for this award, recommenders said the following:

One attribute that I have found that sets Dr. Smock apart is his ability to be involved when needed, yet grant the resident / team the freedom when he is not needed.

Without a doubt I am a better clinician today having had the privilege of working with him.

Dr. Smock knows how to inspire people to achieve excellence. He has high expectations which motivates.

Great leader, decisive, and able to apply the appropriate amount of guidance for each resident.

When staffing patients with Dr. Smock, he provides excellent balance between support and independence in clinical decision making.


GME Symposium ROWAT
The Excellence in Interprofessional Education & Practice award went to Jane Rowat, Education Development Director for Internal Medicine. This award recognizes “non-physician health care team members for their outstanding performance.” In their nomination of Ms. Rowat for this award, recommenders said the following:

Jane Rowat has been an invaluable part of my pathway to becoming a clinician-educator.

She is as devoted to the development of residents within the Internal Medicine program as educators for medical students, fellow residents, and other members of the healthcare team. Her enthusiasm for education and commitment to improving skills go beyond the clinical arena.

She brings energy and perspective to teaching sessions, working seamlessly with residents, medical students, and administrators.

She is an advocate for residents serving as teachers and works individually to add or perfect their teaching skills.

Her genuine joy in helping others, her authenticity, her passion for life-long learning and creativity has been a source of motivation and inspiration for all.


FASANO
Dr. Mary Beth Fasano
, Clinical Professor and Director of the Allergy/Immunology Fellowship Program, received the Leadership Impact Award, which recognizes members whose leadership roles “made significant contributions that advance graduate medical education” at a national level. Some recommenders said the following of Dr. Fasano:

Dr. Fasano is an incredibly well organized, resourceful, and gifted colleague and educator. She has a sensible leadership style, allowing for inclusive and dynamic interactions, and she is always bringing new ideas and collaborations.

She empowers her colleagues and always looks for the best solutions, creating bridges where none existed. She is looked upon with respect and admiration and has a unique leadership style with a smile and soft voice that set her apart. She blends and balances medicine, science, and the human beings behind the professionals. There are few educators and leaders like Dr. Fasano.

Dr. Mary Beth Fasano has demonstrated an inexhaustible depth for service to the cause of graduate education. It would be difficult to find a practicing allergist or immunologist in this country who was not in some way affected by Dr. Fasano’s leadership.


The GME Teaching Awards also recognize outstanding research in the realm of education, and this year, Internal Medicine submitted five abstracts for consideration. Two of those abstracts tied for first place:
