Engagement and Belonging in Medicine – August 2024

Colleagues,

Vice Chair, Engagement and Belonging, Jeydith Gutierrez, MD, MPH

As we step into another month filled with opportunities to make a meaningful impact, I am thrilled to share the latest updates from our Engagement and Belonging Committee. Our commitment to reaching beyond the walls of our hospital and meeting our communities where they are is stronger than ever. We believe that building trusting relationships is key to promoting and achieving health for all, especially with the most vulnerable populations. This month, we are excited to announce our partnership with UI Addiction and Recovery Collaborative and Community and Family Resources for an impactful event on August 28th at FilmScene screening Recovery Boys, which will be followed by a panel in which faculty members Dr. Andrea Weber and Dr. Poorani Sekar will take part on a discussion on addiction. We invite you all to reserve your FREE tickets HERE and join us for this conversation to address an important health challenge in our community. Refreshments will be provided. We are excited for this opportunity to highlight Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 as we prepare for additional events in September to celebrate Recovery Month.

In addition to this significant event, August brings many opportunities to connect with the vibrant Iowa spirit. Whether you’re exploring the iconic Iowa State Fair— which was included in the New York Times best-seller by Patricia Schultz as one of the “1000 Places to See Before You Die“—or enjoying the music and flavors at the Iowa City Latino Fest, there’s no shortage of ways to engage with our community. We are grateful to be part of such a wonderful and diverse community, and we encourage you to take part in these events and share your experiences. If you have ideas for future community engagement initiatives, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are eager to hear from you and continue building bridges that promote health and well-being for all.
