On Friday, May 20, the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine offered their warmest wishes, deep gratitude, and emotional goodbyes to a dozen members, as they neared completion of their time at the University of Iowa as Fellows.
Guests were first treated to the presentation and keynote acceptance of the Cardiovascular Medicine Distinguished Faculty Alumnus Award to Dr. Michael Winniford, Clinical Director of Cardiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Then Fellowship Director Dr. Paul Lindower and other division members then presented awards of distinction to the graduating and continuing fellows and other division members.
The Paul and Mary Neuhauser Award for outstanding presentations by cardiology fellows went to Drs. Hakeem Ayinde, Yohannes Bayissa, and Kongkiat Chaikriangkrai. The Lyle A. and Mabel R. Baker Award for outstanding research performance went to Dr. Hardik Doshi. The Irving George Pesek Humanitarian Award for demonstration of exceptional humanitarianism went to clinical social worker Emily Matthews. The Lewis E. January Memorial Clinical Teaching Award was presented to Dr. James Rossen, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Neurosurgery. The Chief Fellow Award went to Dr. Andres Vargas Estrada for his superb leadership and outstanding academic performance. Finally, the Kanu A. Chatterjee Award for Clinical Excellence went to Dr. Jayasheel Eschol for his actions and accomplishments related to patient care, most closely resembling those of the remarkable and late Dr. Chatterjee.
Following this presentation of awards, Dr. Hazim El-Haddad led a fellows-generated roast of each other filled with good humor and better memories.

Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship
- Belal Al Khiami, M.B., B.S., will head to the University of California, San Diego, to work in Interventional Cardiology.
- Joseph Doerer, M.D., is moving into private practice in Duluth, Minnesota.
- Hardik Doshi, M.B., B.S., will stay at the University of Iowa in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.
- Jayasheel Eschol, M.D., will stay at the University of Iowa in Interventional Cardiology.
- Lee Joseph, M.B., B.S., will stay at the University of Iowa as an Associate in Clinical Research.
- Siva Krothapalli, M.B., B.S., will stay at the University of Iowa in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.
- Andres Vargas Estrada, M.D., will stay at the University of Iowa in Interventional Cardiology.
Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship
- Uzodinma Emerenini, M.D., will pursue advanced training in Electrophysiology at University of Texas Health Science.
- Omer Iqbal, M.B., B.S., will work in Academic Electorphysiology at Hennepin Heart Center.
Heart Failure Fellowship
- Yassar Nabeel, M.B., B.S., will head to Case Western/Metro Health Medical Center to work in Cardiovascular Disease.
Interventional Fellowship
- Bashar Al Jayyousi, M.B., B.S., will move into private practice in Saginaw, Michigan.
- Ravinder Kumar, M.B., B.S., will move into private practice in Des Moines, Iowa.
