Internal Medicine at Iowa

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension may be the smallest in Internal Medicine, but during the American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney Week 2021, they made big moves at the national level. Under the leadership of Division Director Chou-Long Huang, MD, PhD, the division submitted 17 accepted abstracts and presentations for the virtual conference earlier this month.

An abstract led by Diana Jalal, MD, associate professor, and Masaaki Yamada, MD, clinical assistant professor, was also featured in Renal & Urology News during Kidney Week. Jalal and Yamada’s study, Intensive Blood Pressure Control, Age, and All-Cause Mortality in the US Veterans Health Administration, examined the risks of intensive blood pressure control targeting systolic blood pressure levels on older veterans. Using real-world data from 1.9 million veterans, Jalal and Yamada found that cases with a mean systolic blood pressure level of less than 120 mm Hg was associated with an increased risk for all-cause mortality. Furthermore, mortality rates increased with age and were more prevalent in veterans who were 70 and older. The work was done in collaboration with Mary Vaughan-Sarrazin, PhD, associate professor in General Internal Medicine, and the manuscript is forthcoming.

In addition to Jalal and Yamada’s study, the 16 other abstracts accepted are listed below. Ten of these abstracts were conducted by the clinical research program.
