Sivitz presents 2026 DiBona Award lecture

In April, William (Bill) Sivitz, MD, emeritus professor in Endocrinology and Metabolism, was announced as the sixth recipient of the DiBona Award for Academics in Service of the ICVAHCS. His formal recognition and delivery of the annual DiBona Award Lecture followed on May 14 during Internal Medicine Grand Rounds.

Sivitz was introduced by two faculty members and colleagues–Diana Jalal, MD, professor in Nephrology and Chief of the Medical Service at the ICVAHCS, and Yumi Imai, MD, professor in Endocrinology and Metabolism and section chief of Endocrinology at the ICVAHCS. Both Jalal and Imai gave touching and comprehensive overviews of Sivitz’s impact on diabetes research, clinical care, and mentoring of trainees that followed. Those in attendance got a taste of Sivitz’s talent for education in his presentation on the evolution of Type I Diabetes diagnosis, treatment, and research. Sivitz’s presentation, “Type 1 Diabetes 150 years: Past, Present, Future,” is available at the link.

Gerald DiBona, MD, the award’s namesake and exemplar, joined Sivitz  for a picture. Of this photo with Sivitz and another with Emeritus Professor and Chair François M. Abboud, MD, DiBona said, “represents a good portion of my 40 years at Iowa.”
