Late last month, leadership within the Carver College of Medicine launched a new event celebrating both medical student education as well as graduate medical education (GME). In the past, the GME office held the Leadership Symposium, which offered both a showcase for resident-led education research and innovation and celebrated excellence in teaching and mentoring.
Manish Suneja, MD, associate dean for medical education integration and innovation, and Tracey Cho, MD, associate dean for GME leadership and development, served as co-chairs for a new event this year, Medical Education Day. Expanding beyond the briefer scope of the leadership symposium to also include undergraduate and continuing medical education, the two led the establishment of a day-long event with educational sessions, poster presentations, and awards. “This event,” Suneja and Cho said, “represents a foundational step in building the UI Health Care Academy of Medical Educators.” They hope this inaugural event created a “vibrant forum for connection and shared learning.”
In addition to Suneja, many members of the department had a hand in contributing to that forum. Some served on the planning committees, others led breakout sessions, but it was the internal medicine residents who comprised the largest contingent of participants. Of the 48 posters on display for the judged poster competition, 23 of them were presented by department residents. Topics ranged from using artificial intelligence to fostering physical and financial wellness.
In the end, judges awarded a second-place prize to Carlie Sorensen, MD, for the documentation of her experience teaching complex decision making to graduating medical students during the annual Transition to Residency course. An additional award–the Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award–was also presented to Med-Psych resident Megan Napier, MD.
