The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to introduce some of the newest members who joined us between January and June 2026 (start dates in parentheses). We are happy to welcome them to the department.
Dr. McKenzie Arnold joined the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as a nurse practitioner, where she cares for patients in both the inpatient Diabetes Hospitalist Service and the Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic. Dr. Arnold received her MSN and DNP degrees from Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, staying active, cycling, trying new healthy recipes, traveling, and becoming more involved in the diabetes community, including volunteering with Breakthrough T1D.
Luis Berrios joined the Division of General Internal Medicine, where he will care for patients at Heartland Drive in Coralville. He received his MSN from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. His hobbies include walking, hiking, reading, and cooking.
Dr. Evelyn Chinem joins the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a Clinical Assistant Professor. She previously served as a gastroenterologist and endoscopist at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro and at several renowned private hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Dr. Chinem earned her medical degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where she also completed her residency in Internal Medicine. She then completed her residency in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, where she also obtained her Master of Science (MSc) degree. Her clinical and research interests include image-enhanced endoscopy, third-space endoscopy with a focus on endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and inflammatory bowel disease. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, dancing, and listening to music.
Caitlin Coates joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as a nurse practitioner in January and has been seeing patients at UI Healthcare Downtown Campus. She received her BSN from Coe College in Cedar Rapids and spent 10 years in the Medical ICU as a RN. She was also a member of the ECMO team. She received her MSN from Allen College in Waterloo. When not at work, she enjoys reading and spending time with her husband and two little boys.
Annamarie Dotzler joined the Endocrinology and Metabolism Division in March as a physician assistant, where she sees patients in the weight management clinic at MSC and IRL. She received her MPS degree from the UI Carver College of Medicine in 12/2024. In her spare time, she likes to read, hike, kayak, attend theater productions, and spend time with her friends, family, and her cat, Cleo.
Clare Dunne joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation as a physician assistant, where she will care for malignant hematology patients. She was born and raised in Iowa City and received her MPAS degree from the UI Carver College of Medicine. She enjoys being outside and spending time with friends and family in her spare time.
Tatum Gregston joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as a hospitalist with the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant team, where she cares for patients at UI Health Care Medical Center, University Campus. She received her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Manchester, New Hampshire. She is originally from Arvada, Colorado. Outside of work, she likes to run, hike, camp, travel, be with her dogs, watch movies/shows, and go to coffee shops.
Dr. Hussain joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation as a Clinical Associate Professor after serving as faculty at the Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Illinois. Dr. Hussain earned his MBBS from the University of Punjab, Allama Iqbal Medical College in Pakistan. He completed an internal medicine internship at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore, followed by residency training at Pinnacle Health Hospitals (UPMC) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He subsequently completed a Hematology and Oncology Fellowship at Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Fellowship at Stanford University. His clinical and research interests include plasma cell disorders, lymphoproliferative disorders, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He is particularly interested in advancing patient-centered care while integrating emerging therapies and clinical research to improve outcomes for patients with hematologic malignancies. Outside of medicine, Dr. Hussain enjoys spending time with his family. He is an avid tennis, boxing, and soccer fan, enjoys traveling, and loves cooking.
SJ Kelley joined the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as a nurse practitioner in the Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic. She received her MSN from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Outside of work, SJ volunteers with a free medical clinic and spends time with her two kids and their big grey cat.
Alindsey Kramer joined the Division of Hospital Medicine as a nurse practitioner, where she cares for patients at UI Health Care Medical Center, Downtown Campus. She received her MSN from the University of Iowa, and her post masters Family and Acute Care degrees from University of Iowa and University of Colorado. She also practices as an Emergency NP, and as a firefighter AEMT. She enjoys spending time with her spouse and children (both human and furry), hiking, traveling, and seeing live music.
Dr. Mariia Kumskova has been appointed as a Research Assistant Professor within the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation from her position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. She received her MD from the Russian State Medical University in Moscow, followed by a hematology residency at the National Medical Research Center for Hematology Center there. Her research focuses on platelet biology, including abnormalities in platelet interaction with extracellular matrix components and their role in the pathophysiology of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Dr. Kumskova enjoys hiking, watching movies, and spending time with her family and friends when not at work.
Dr. Rakeshkumar Patel has been appointed as a Research Assistant Professor within the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation from his position as a Postdoctoral Research Scholar. He received his MPharm degree in Pharmacology from Gujarat University in India, followed by a PhD in Pharmaceutical Science from Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya University there. Dr. Patel’s research focuses on metabolic reprogramming of neutrophils in stroke. Outside of the lab, he enjoys walking, watching cricket, and spending time with family.
Dr. Sreeja Pillai joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in January 2026 as a nurse practitioner, where she sees patients in the GI Clinic. She received her DNP degree from Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. In her spare time, she enjoys riding her bike, traveling, watching movies, cooking, and spending quality time with her family.
Dr. Jacqueline “Jaci” Rhomberg joined the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology on April 27, 2026. She will see patients at our UI Health Care Downtown (MCD) location. She obtained her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa in 2017, Bachelors of Arts in Spanish in 2018, and recently completed her Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) in Family Nursing Practice from Baylor University (Waco, TX) in December 2025. Prior to becoming a gastroenterology nurse practitioner, she worked for 8 years as a registered nurse in a variety of environments including adult inpatient internal medicine/ICU step-down units, in DHC procedures at MCU, and endoscopy at MCD. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, family, and friends, using her “green thumb” in her many garden beds, hiking and spending time in the outdoors, traveling the world, cooking or baking new recipes in her kitchen, and catching up on episodes of “The Pitt” or “Ted Lasso.” Dr. Rhomberg says she is also a sports fanatic and a huge fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers (GO PACK GO), Milwaukee Brewers, Indiana Fever, and US Men’s & Women’s Soccer.
Dr. Amanda Robertson joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation as a nurse practitioner, where she will care for malignant hematology inpatients. She received her BSN as well as her DNP from the UI Carver College of Medicine.
Derek Salow joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a physician assistant, where he cares for patients at Iowa River Landing. He received his MPAS from the University of Dubuque. Away from the clinic, Derek enjoys working out, reading, listening to music, spending time with his family, and trying new food.
Dr. João Medrado Santos joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplantation after serving as a Medical Oncologist at Hospital Mater Dei and as a Professor of Oncology at Zarns Medical School (formerly FTC Medical School) in Salvador, Brazil. He received his medical degree from the Federal University of Bahia School of Medicine in Salvador (Brazil), followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at Hospital do Mandaqui in São Paulo (Brazil). He subsequently completed a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Hospital Sírio-Libanês in São Paulo and earned an MSc in Biotechnology in Health and Investigative Medicine from Fiocruz in Salvador. He also served as a Teaching Assistant for Harvard University’s Principles and Practice of Clinical Research program (USA), where he received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for three consecutive years. His clinical practice focuses on gastrointestinal (GI) oncology, and his research interests include GI oncology clinical trials. Dr. Medrado Santos enjoys spending time with his family and friends, staying active through regular exercise, reading, and traveling.
Gracyn Tabor joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a physician assistant, where she sees general GI patients in the DHC. She earned her undergraduate and MPH degree from the UI College of Public Health, as well as an MPAS from St. Ambrose University in Davenport. When not working, Gracyn loves to cook and bake, watch Hawkeye basketball games, and spend time with her partner and their cat.
Dr. Averi Wilson has joined the Division of Hospital Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor, coming from a faculty position at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Wilson earned her MD degree at the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Medicine, followed by an internal medicine/pediatrics residency at UT Southwestern. She also completed fellowships in Pediatric Hospital Medicine and Clinical Informatics there. Her clinical interests focus on the care of children and adults with medical complexity and using the EHR to improve clinical documentation and clinical communication. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, toddler, and senior dog.
