Our nationally recognized fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease brings recruits from all over the globe and even right next door. Their interests are as varied as they are, and we are proud to introduce you to this year’s incoming cardiology fellows.
Mohammed Mhanna, MD, MPH
Medical School: Al-Quds University Faculty of Medicine
Residency: University of Toledo
Hometown: Gaza, Palestine
Area of interest: Atrial fibrillation, hemodynamics, mechanical circulatory support.
Why Iowa: Everything in UI Health Care aligns with my interests in all aspects of cardiology, the extensive clinical exposure, the great research opportunities, and the friendly atmosphere.
Fun thing I did on a recent day off: Visited a local you-pick farm
Thing that people are usually surprised to learn about me: I make good meals.
Senior fellow or faculty member who taught me something useful in my first couple weeks at UIHC: Too many to mention!
William Parker, MD
Medical School: University of South Alabama
Residency: Cleveland Clinic
Hometown: Birmingham, Alabama
Area of interest: Electrophysiology or cardiac critical care
Why Iowa: The people are so genuinely nice!
Fun thing I did on a recent day off: Went for a run on the Woodpecker/Squire Point Trail along the Iowa River, then grabbed a drink with a co-fellow.
Thing that people are usually surprised to learn about me: I really enjoy cultural geography and can name at least one interesting fact about most countries around the globe.
Faculty member who taught me something useful in my first couple weeks at UIHC: Dr. Jennifer Streeter was patient with me as I fumbled around the cath lab for the first few weeks. She spent time teaching me how to refine my vascular ultrasound technique. She also helped me work through cases of complex access (e.g.; brachial right heart cath in a patient without IJ access), and how to think through each step systematically.
Jared Robl, MD
Medical School: University of Kansas
Residency: University of Iowa
Hometown: Salina, Kansas
Area of interest: interventional cardiology, hemodynamics
Why Iowa: Loved my time here in residency, everyone genuinely cares about your well-being and success. Iowa City is a great place to live and raise a family.
Fun thing I did on a recent day off: Took my daughter to a pumpkin patch.
Thing that people are usually surprised to learn about me: I enjoy world history.
Senior fellow who taught me something useful in my first couple weeks at UIHC: I started fellowship in the cath lab, Jai and Ahmed were both incredibly welcoming and amazing teachers. Great role models to emulate during fellowship.
Sinan Sayood, MD
Medical School: University of Nebraska
Residency: Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center
Hometown: Lincoln, Nebraska
Area of interest: Cardiac critical care
Why Iowa: It’s a full-stop shop for cardiac care with a legendary reputation for all forms of research.
Fun thing I did on a recent day off: Cooked some burgers and narrowly avoided burning my apartment down. Thrilling and nutritious!
Thing that people are usually surprised to learn about me: I love to windsurf (they’re less surprised to find out I’m awful at it).
Faculty member who taught me something useful in my first couple weeks at UIHC: Dr. Chaikriangkrai taught me how to avoid getting my fingers bitten while conducting transesophageal echocardiograms. Nobody mentioned that in interviews . . .
