Farewell from our 2022–23 Chief Residents

We are loath to admit that it is the end of our chief year, but much like Dr. Smock writing letters of recommendation—deadlines are deadlines.

For each of us, this year has been an invaluable experience for our growth as physicians. Having this year to emulate the recruitment, teaching, advocacy, and leadership that we received as residents was a privilege.

While we are excited to start the next chapter of our careers, it is difficult to part from the program that has meant so much to us. This is an incredible program filled with dedicated, supportive, and brilliant individuals that will undoubtedly continue to cultivate a culture built on kindness, excellence, and copious coffee consumption.

To the program leadership, Dr. Suneja, Dr. Smock, Dr. Harris, Dr. Johnson, Dr. Gehlbach, and Dr. Bryant: thank you for the career, personal, and parental mentorship you have provided over the last year. You have all played such a vital role in each of our development. Thank you to Cindy, Abbey, Denise, and our new friend Stacy—the walls of General Hospital would literally cave in without you.

We will miss you all, and know the leadership hallway will be quieter, and likely more efficient, without us.

Ahmed Abdelhamid, MD, will begin a cardiovascular disease fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University; Tyler Bullis, MD, will begin a cardiovascular disease fellowship at the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Mackenzie Hines, MD, will begin an allergy/immunology fellowship at University of Iowa Health Care; and Samuel Zetumer, MD, will become the Chief Health Informatics Officer at the Iowa City VA Health System and a hospitalist at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
