Meet Your Interns 2023, part 2

We are proud to present the incoming Intern Class of 2023. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a month or so, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We will introduce them a few at a time each week for the next couple months. Welcome to Iowa!

“Why Iowa”: The people and the community. During my interview, the APDs, PD, and residents were all very kind and genuine. It was evident that everyone here is focused on providing excellent training!

What I like about Iowa City: The town truly has a little bit of everything. My favorite thing so far have been the restaurants. There is a great variety of foods here from all over the world. Furthermore, I have made some great friends in the program and look forward to hanging out with them.

Katherine Holder, MD

Hometown: Amarillo, Texas

“Why Iowa”: I loved the University of Iowa’s kind, welcoming culture. The programs at UIHC seemed to have a strong academic culture and still prioritized practicing practical, community medicine. To me, this program is a perfect place to learn!

What I like about Iowa City: Iowa City is such a cute place to live. It’s a UNESCO city of literature, and I love attending book readings and checking out the local bookstores. I also love that it’s a college town with so many cute, local gems. There is always something to do! PLUS if you like the outdoors, IC has a plethora of hiking, biking, etc.!

Austin Mallory, MD, MS

Hometown: Monument, Colorado

Medical school: University of Colorado

“Why Iowa”: I chose Iowa for a number of reasons. I appreciate the friendly work environment, affordable living, and a good selection of fellowship programs.

What I like about Iowa City: As I have two kids (a 3y/o and 4m/o), I have been loving the family-centered culture in Iowa City. My neighborhood is filled with kids so my toddler has made good friends with other neighborhood kids and loves to run around outside!
