Meet Your Interns 2023, part 5

We are proud to present the incoming Intern Class of 2023. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a month or so, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We will introduce them a few at a time each week for the next couple months. Welcome to Iowa!

Ryan Emmanuel, MD

Hometown: Bloomingdale, Illinois

Medical school: Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University

“Why Iowa”: I wanted to come to Iowa because of how genuine the people here are. One of my favorite attendings in medical school was a graduate from this program, so I knew I would be in good hands.

What I like about Iowa City: I am glad that there are multiple nature spots that are close enough for me to check out in my free time.

Ryan Kimmis, MD

Hometown: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Medical school: State University of New York – Upstate

“Why Iowa”: Iowa offered the greatest number of resources and avenues I wanted to pursue, packaged in a welcoming culture. Iowa City offers more activities than expected in a walkable, bike-friendly and affordable city.

Professional/Research Interests: Broad. I have subspecialty interests in neuro-oncology, migraine, neuroimmunology, stroke, neurointerventional, movement, neuromuscular, epilepsy, with some research in stroke.

Interests: I read, and try to write. I enjoy cooking, and have been thinking about taking up drumming again. I have really been enjoying cycling around the city on my new bike!

Rob Schoeneich, MD

Hometown: Glen Ellyn, Illinois

Medical school: Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University

“Why Iowa”: I could tell this program was great just by the way Dr. Suneja and the APDs were so welcoming. I knew this would be a great environment to learn in.

What I like about Iowa City: I love how close the golf courses are. I can even hit a couple balls at Finkbine after work!

Katrina Carolyn Soyangco, MD

Hometown: Galesburg, Illinois

Medical school: University of Illinois College of Medicine – Rockford

“Why Iowa”: People in my home county regard the University of Iowa as the go-to tertiary care center. Family friends are happy with their care here, from the specialized treatments to the compassion from their providers. In the past weeks, I have met many kind people and have learned so much. I couldn’t agree with them more!

What I like about Iowa City: With Iowa City being a college town, it’s lively but not overwhelmingly big or busy. There’s always something to do. My favorite things so far have been visiting the coffee shops, the farmer’s market, and the local bead shop.
