We are proud to present the incoming Intern Class of 2023. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a month or so, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We will introduce them a few at a time each week for the next couple months. Welcome to Iowa!
Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah
Medical school: University of Utah School of Medicine
“Why Iowa”: The program and people seemed so inclusive during my away rotation and on interview day. It’s also such a great place to go if you have a family, as there are so many fun things to do in the area.
What I like about Iowa City: The lakes, trails, fun restaurants, and Hawkeye football!
Hometown: Columbia, Missouri
Medical school: University of Missouri School of Medicine
“Why Iowa”: I thoroughly enjoyed my Interview Day experience, including the conversation I had with Dr. Suneja about medical education. I could not pass up the opportunity to train at such a well-respected academic program that would prepare me to be an outstanding internist, researcher, and medical educator. Through my interactions with senior residents and faculty across several in-patient and outpatient services, I can already tell that I made the right choice in coming here.
What I like about Iowa City: Iowa City is very beautiful, with accessible parks and rivers all around. There is a strong sense of community within our residency program, which has played out in athletic events (competitive pickleball and basketball matches) and escape room adventures!
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Medical school: University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley
“Why Iowa”: Interview day was amazing! I talked to every interviewer about our dogs and coffee, 2 very important things for residency. It seemed like the program really cared about their residents and prioritized their learning and well-being equally.
What I like about Iowa City: I’m glad my interview day impressions rang true! I also love the weather coming from the south. It has a great small town vibe coupled with an exceptional academic hospital where I can start my career.
Hometown: Camas, Washington
Medical school: University of Washington
“Why Iowa”: My favorite rotation of medical school was an away rotation at UIHC’s combined Medical Psychiatry unit. I really enjoyed the supportive learning environment and really hoped I would have an opportunity to come back!
What I like about Iowa City: I love the walkability (only having to fill up my gas tank once a month) and the close proximity to trail systems. Even more so, I have really enjoyed getting to know my awesome co-residents!
Hometown: Fayetteville, North Carolina
Medical school: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
“Why Iowa”: Everyone made me feel welcome as someone who is new to Iowa. The IM residency at UIHC is an incredibly supportive program. In just these few short months, I have felt how invested everyone is, from faculty to co-residents, in our learning as trainees.
What I like about Iowa City: I love walking on all of the different trails in town. I also like exploring new coffee shops and restaurants in downtown Iowa City and neighboring towns, Coralville and North Liberty.
