New Faculty and APP Additions – 2026
The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to introduce some of the department’s newest members, most of whom joined us between July and August 2026 (start dates in parentheses). More new providers will be announced in the coming weeks. We are happy to welcome them to the department.
Hosung Bae, PhD (8/3/26)
Dr. Hosung Bae joined the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as an Assistant Professor following his postdoctoral training at the University of California, Irvine. He completed his PhD in Biomedical Science at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, Korea, followed by a visiting scholarship at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on how bile acid exchange beyond its classical regulatory network influences pathophysiology, and how metabolite exchange between organs contributes to the development and progression of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. In his spare time, Dr. Bae enjoys spending time with his two children, a 10-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter.
Abbie Begnaud, MD ( 7/8/26)
Dr. Abbie Begnaud joined the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, & Occupational Medicine as a Clinical Professor from an Associate Professor position at the University of Minnesota, where she also served as the director of the Interventional Pulmonology Fellowship Program. Dr. Begnaud received her MD from Louisiana State University in Shreveport, LA, followed by an internal medicine residency at the University of Kansas, where she also served as Chief Resident. In addition, Dr. Begnaud completed a Pulmonary & Critical Care fellowship and Interventional Pulmonology training at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Her clinical and research interests focus on lung cancer across the cancer continuum from early detection, screening, diagnosis and molecular profiling to survivorship. In her free time, she is parenting a strong-willed child and developing her gardening and tailgating skills.
Stephanie Bowman, PhD, JD, LCPC (7/31/26)
Dr. Stephanie Bowman joined the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as a clinical assistant professor from a faculty position in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program in the Counselor Education Department at the UI College of Education. She received her JD from the Chicago-Kent College of Law in Chicago, after which she completed her MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Northwestern University and PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Adler University. Dr Bowman’s clinical and research interests include childhood trauma, cognitive complexity, AI, and reflective practice. She enjoys riding her bike, writing her novel, and spinning vinyl in her spare time.
Nicole Bro, MPAS, PA-C (8/10/26)
Nicole Bro joined the Division of Nephrology as a Physician Associate, where she will care for patients at UI Health Care Medical Center. She received her MPAS degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, where she is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Physician Assistant Studies and Services. Prior to becoming a PA, she completed her degree at Iowa State University and further training at the University of Iowa to become a registered dietitian, and she still maintains her certification. Outside of the clinic, Bro enjoys spending time with her husband, son, and daughter, and their cat and dog. She loves to run, read, garden, cook, and enjoys film and music.
Shinya Hasegawa, MD (7/1/26)
Dr. Shinya Hasegawa joined the Division of Infectious Diseases as a Clinical Assistant Professor after completing an ID fellowship here. He received his MD from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan, followed by an internship at Musashino Red Cross Hospital in Tokyo and a residency at the Kameda Medical Center in Chiba, Japan. Dr. Hasegawa’s clinical and research interests involve hospital epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship. His hobbies include spending time with his two children and growing vegetables in a garden.
Truman Nguyen, MD – (7/27/26)
Dr. Truman Nguyen joined the Division of Immunology as a Clinical Assistant Professor after completion of his Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at UI Health Care. Dr. Nguyen received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health in Madison, followed by an internal medicine residency at the University of Iowa. His clinical interests include drug allergy and urticaria. When he isn’t working, Dr. Nguyen enjoys cooking, sharing meals with close friends and family, and traveling.
Dominik Thomas, MD (7/31/26)
Dr. Dominik Thomas joined the Division of Nephrology as a Clinical Assistant Professor after completing his Renal Genetics fellowship here. He received his MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed his internal medicine internship at NYU-Langone in Brooklyn, medicine residency at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles, and fellowships in Nephrology and Transplant Nephrology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Dr. Thomas’s research and clinical interests include kidney transplant and renal genetics. He enjoys skiing and tennis in his free time.
Tong Yu, MD – (7/8/26)
Dr. Tong Yu has joined the Division of Hospital Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor from a hospitalist position at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She earned her MD degree from the UI Carver College of Medicine, followed by an internal medicine residency here. She enjoys long walks past Hancher through City Park, reading, and listening to podcasts in her free time.
Jingjing Zheng, MD, PhD (7/1/26)
Dr. Jingjing Zheng has been appointed as a Research Assistant Professor within the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine from a position as a postdoctoral research scholar in Dr. Long-Sheng Song’s laboratory. Dr. Zheng earned her MD at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, followed by a PhD in electrophysiology there. Dr. Zheng’s research interests focus on sudden cardiac death, ventricular arrhythmia, cardiac channelopathies, calcium handling, and AAV gene therapy. Outside of the lab, she enjoys biking and hiking.
