Though the medical school and residency programs may grab more attention by volume, a quiet but unique class of graduates has also matriculated. Members of the Faculty/Fellows as Clinician Educators (FACE) Program were awarded their certificates of completion last week.
In a collaboration between the department and the Office of Consultation and Research in Medical Education (OCRME), the program is designed to offer clinical faculty and fellows who have a special interest in teaching. Although most medical schools have designated a clinical-educator track for its faculty, FACE at Iowa has produced a curriculum to provide them with a greater degree of specialized training than that offered to more traditional clinicians or those on a physician-scientist research track.
The program is open to hospitalists within the Division of General Internal Medicine and any interested Internal Medicine fellows with Program Director approval. FACE is directed by Manish Suneja, MD; Marcy Rosenbaum, PhD; and Krista Johnson, MD, MME, and incorporates a year-long series of readings and responses on clinical teaching skills, observation and feedback, small group teaching, and interactive lecture development. Supplemental teaching opportunities, such as an educational research or curriculum development project, are encouraged and FACE Program faculty provide guidance and mentorship in the work.
“What sets Iowa apart,” Suneja said, “is our ability to provide structured resources for trainees at every level and for faculty who have identified a particular goal in their careers. The FACE program is a great opportunity for a faculty member or fellow who has a passion for teaching to rise to the next level in their teaching skills.”
Congratulations to this year’s newest cohort of FACE graduates!
