Members of the Faculty/Fellows as Clinician Educators (FACE) Program were awarded their certificates of completion this past June. Unlike in years past, this year the program held their graduation event virtually, but this was not an unfamiliar environment. This year FACE participants faced unique challenges of trying to teach in the midst of a pandemic requiring physical distancing, PPE, and many Zoom meetings.

The FACE program offers a longitudinal teaching skills curriculum for clinical faculty and fellows who have a special interest in clinical education. Sessions are highly interactive and introduce educational concepts, provide teaching skills practice, committing to an action plan for improving participants’ teaching, followed by deliberate practice in the workplace and reflection. This past year’s topics included Learning Climate, Clinical Reasoning, Clinical Teaching Models, Feedback, Bedside and Team Teaching, Teaching Procedures, and Interactive Lecturing. Participants also record themselves teaching and present their teaching videos to the class to get feedback and generate discussion.
The program is currently for hospitalists in the Division of General Internal Medicine and interested Internal Medicine fellows who have obtained Program Director approval. FACE is directed by Manish Suneja, MD; Marcy Rosenbaum, PhD; and Krista Johnson, MD, MME. Program leadership prepared the following statement:
We held our final session in June via Zoom where participants reflected on changes in their teaching after participating in FACE, as well as how COVID-19 affected their teaching. We appreciate this class’s enthusiastic participation and thank them for their dedication and flexibility. Congratulations to the 2020 Graduating Class of FACE!
