New Faculty Additions – 2022

The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to introduce faculty members who joined us from January through May 2022 (start dates in parentheses). We are happy to welcome them to the department.


Dean Abramson, MD – Clinical Associate Professor (3/1/22)

Dr. Dean Abramson joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology after thirty-three years in private practice in Gastroenterology in Cedar Rapids, IA. Dr. Abramson earned his MD from New York University School of Medicine, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at Danbury Hospital and a GI fellowship at the Waterbury and Yale New Haven Hospitals in Connecticut. Dr. Abramson’s clinical interests include luminal gastroenterology, colorectal cancer screening, and quality metrics in GI endoscopy. In his spare time, he enjoys landscape and nature photography, history, and politics.


Karen Brust, MD – Clinical Associate Professor (5/1/22)

Dr. Karen Brust joins the Division of Infectious Diseases as a Clinical Associate Professor, as well as the new Hospital Epidemiologist for UI Health Care. She comes to Iowa from her position as Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) in Texas. Dr. Brust received her MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas, where she also completed an ID fellowship. Her clinical interests include outbreak management, multidrug resistant organisms, and acute care management of patients. She enjoys spending time with loved ones, traveling, and cooking for her family.


Jeffrey Goldman, MD, MBA – Clinical Associate Professor (1/25/22)

Dr. Jeffrey Goldman jointed the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a Clinical Associate Professor from his recent practice at Advocate Aurora Medical Center Health in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin. Dr. Goldman received his MD from the University of Illinois in Chicago, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. He completed his Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison. Dr. Goldman also completed an MBA from the Keller School of Business Management in Chicago, Illinois. His clinical specialty focuses in IBD, and he will see patients at both the UIHC main campus and at Iowa River Landing. In his spare time, Dr. Goldman enjoys working out, reading, traveling (pre-COVID), and spending time with family, including his two granddaughters.


Lauren Graham, MD, MPH – Clinical Assistant Professor (1/4/22)

Dr. Lauren Graham comes to the Division of General Internal Medicine from Unity Point Grinnell Regional Medical Center, where she served as a hospitalist and general internist for high-risk outpatients. Dr. Graham received a Master of Public Health and MD from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. She also completed an Internal Medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Her clinical and research interests focus on rural health and post-acute sequelae of SARS COV-2 (PASC). Outside of work, she likes to read, travel, and spend time with her family.


James Murphy, MD – Clinical Associate Professor (5-1-22)

Dr. James Murphy joins the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Occupational Medicine as a Clinical Associate Professor, and has also been named the Chief Quality Officer for UI Health Care. Dr. Murphy received his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in the Bronx, New York. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the NYU School of Medicine, and completed his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, where he was an Assistant Professor and also served as Medical Director of Inpatient Quality, Critical Care Quality, and Respiratory Therapy before coming to Iowa. His clinical and research interests include process improvement in the delivery of critical care in specific and medicine in general. In his free time, as a native New Yorker, he enjoys arguing about everything.
