Orientation week for our interns is filled with a lot of activity and a lot of looking ahead. Learning the layout of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, getting logons and badges and portraits and handbooks, a tsunami of information, each piece of which feels critical to commit to memory.
In an effort to introduce some calm into the week, our residency program always schedules a welcome event in that week before the PGY-1s step into their first rotation assignments. In recent years, a picnic in City Park along the Iowa River offered a chance to make informal introductions between faculty, residents, friends, significant others, and even pets.
This year, the program invited members to Tin Roost, a restaurant in nearby North Liberty. Although the smoke from Canadian wildfires kept attendees inside, everyone still enjoyed the buffet and bar and to learn a little more about their new colleagues.
