New Faculty and APP Additions – 2026
The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to introduce some of the department’s newest members, most of whom joined us in July 2026 (start dates in parentheses). More new providers will be announced in the coming weeks. We are happy to welcome them to the department.
Parikshit Chapagain, MBBS (7/1/26)
Dr. Parikshit Chapagain joined the Division of Hospital Medicine as a clinical assistant professor, where he will care for patients at the UI Heath Care Medical Center. He received his medical degree from the Tribhuvan University Institute of Medicine in Kathmandu, Nepal, followed by a residency in internal medicine at AdventHealth Orlando, where he also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Chapagain’s clinical interests focus on cardiovascular medicine. Outside medicine, he enjoys trekking.
Chirayu Mohindroo, MBBS – (7/1/26)
Dr. Chirayu Mohindroo joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation as a clinical assistant professor from a clinical fellowship in Hematology / Oncology at the NIH National Cancer Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed medical school at the Government Medical College and Hospital, in Chandigarh, India, followed by an internal medicine residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. His clinical and research interests focus on small-cell lung cancer and high-grade neuroendocrine tumors. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling and trying different cuisines and new restaurants.
M. Housam Nanah, MD – (7/1/26)
Dr. Housam Nanah joins the Division of Hospital Medicine as a clinical assistant professor, caring for patients at UI Health Care Medical Center. He received his MD from Aleppo University School of Medicine in Syria and completed his internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. His clinical interests include the care of medically complex patients and evidence-based medicine, with a focus on translating current evidence into thoughtful, individualized clinical decision-making. He is also passionate about medical education, with particular interests in teaching clinical reasoning and fostering evidence-based practice. Outside the hospital, Dr. Nanah enjoys exploring new hiking trails, spending time with family, and traveling.
Geoffroy Napon, MD – (7/1/26)
Dr. Geoffroy Napon has joined the Division of Hospital Medicine as a clinical assistant professor, where he will take care of patients at the UI Health Care Medical Center. Dr. Napon received his MD from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, followed by an internal medicine residency at the University of Iowa-Des Moines Internal Medicine Program. Dr. Napon’s clinical interests focus on general internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases. In his spare time, he likes to watch or play soccer. He also enjoys trying different local cuisines.
Tran Nolte, ARNP, MSN, FNP-BC – (6/29/26)
Tran Nolte joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a nurse practitioner, where she will see patients at Iowa River Landing. She received her BSN and MSN from Edgewood University in Madison, Wisconsin. Nolte enjoys exploring hiking trails, waterfall hunting, baking, and playing trivia/board games in her free time.
Toru Nyunoya, MD – (7/13/26)
Dr. Toru Nyunoya returns to the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine as an associate professor after serving on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. He received his MD from the University of Tokushima School of Medicine in Japan, where he also completed his internship. He subsequently completed an internal medicine residency at Matsui Hospital in Kanonji, Japan, followed by a gastroenterology fellowship at Tokushima Prefectural Hospital. He later completed an internal medicine residency at University of Hawaii–affiliated hospitals in Honolulu and a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Dr. Nyunoya’s clinical and research interests focus on COPD and emphysema, lung epithelial biology, mechanisms of lung injury and repair, and the effects of aging and environmental exposures on chronic lung disease. In his free time, he enjoys singing karaoke and hiking in nature.
Carlie Sorensen, MD – (7/1/26)
Dr. Carlie Sorensen joins the Division of Hospital Medicine as a clinical assistant professor, where she will care for patients at UI Health Care Medical Center. She received her MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, followed by an internal medicine residency at UI Health Care. Dr. Sorensen’s clinical interests include medical education. When not at the hospital, she enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and two cats, as well as reading, nature walks, and trying out new restaurants.
Deepak Vangipuram, MBBS, MD, MRCP – (7/1/26)
Dr. Deepak Vangipuram joins the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as a clinical assistant professor after completing his Endocrinology and Diabetes fellowship here. He received an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, Karnataka, India, and an MD from Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India, followed by an internal medicine residency at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut, where he also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Vangipuram’s clinical and research interests include diabetes, adrenal, and pituitary endocrinology. His hobbies include reading and listening to music.
Shawn Yu, MD, PhD – (7/1/26)
Dr. Shawn Yu joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation as an assistant professor in July. He came to Iowa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he trained in medical oncology and was most recently an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellow. Earlier, he earned his MD and PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle and completed internal medicine residency at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Dr. Yu cares for patients with genitourinary malignancies, and his research uses computational protein design to build proteins that do not exist in nature, with the goal of making cancer therapies safer and more precise. Outside of work, he follows basketball and college football closely and is looking forward to his first season in Hawkeye territory!
