Meet your Interns 2026, part 6
We are proud to present this year’s incoming interns. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a month or so, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We will introduce them a few at a time each week for the next couple months. Welcome to Iowa!
Madison Brewster, MD
Hometown: Gilbert, Arizona
Medical school: University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine
“Why Iowa”: Simply put, the people. From my first interaction with the program as a student, it was evident that every resident, faculty, and staff member is genuinely invested in their learners and their greater community. I quickly felt embraced by the Internal Medicine team, not only as a physician in training, but also as a whole person. This community truly feels like family!
What I like about Iowa City: Similar to my experience at the university, I have fallen in love with the people / community of Iowa City! I have loved getting to know the city beyond campus and discovering all of the little things that make this community feel so special. Some of my favorite activities around town include playing pickleball in City Park, indulging in one too many pastries from Bread Worthy, watching movies at FilmScene, and meeting friends for wine tasting at Bread Garden.

“Why Iowa”: What attracted me to Iowa is the people. During my years here, I found myself surrounded by some of the finest professionals and educators I could hope to learn from.
What I like about Iowa City: I like the FilmScene outdoor movies in the summers, and the Bijou series the rest of the year.

“Why Iowa”: I loved all of the people I met and felt like the residency culture was exactly what I was looking for!
What I like about Iowa City: I love all of the bike and running trails! Its so fun to be in a place that has a lot of greenery and outdoor activities.

Medical school: Zhongshan Medical School
“Why Iowa”: I was especially drawn to Iowa by the strength of its clinical training and the opportunity to grow as both a neurologist and a physician-scientist. The supportive environment and strong neuroscience research community made Iowa a particularly exciting place for me to continue my training.
What I like about Iowa City: I’ve really enjoyed how easy it is to find something new to explore around Iowa City. I love cooking and baking, so I’ve had a lot of fun discovering local farmers’ markets, grocery stores, and restaurants and then trying to recreate things at home. I also appreciate how easy it is to get outdoors and enjoy a quieter pace of life after a busy day at the hospital.

“Why Iowa”: The people! The kindness here is truly second to none. I was also drawn to the top-notch clinical training, strong emphasis on education, and genuinely nurturing environment.
What I like about Iowa City: The Iowa City Farmers Market, movies at FilmScene, Daydrink’s ube matcha, and catching a game at Iowa Athletic Club!
