Alan B. Moy, MD, 1959-2024

Our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Alan Moy. Dr. Moy was a graduate of our Pulmonary fellowship program and stayed on as a faculty member of our Pulmonary division for more than a decade. He was a valued member of our community and will be deeply missed.

The following is an excerpt from his obituary:

[Dr. Moy] received a BS degree in biochemistry at the University of California at Davis followed by a MD degree from Creighton University in 1985. [He] did his Internal Medicine residency at St. Louis University, and later moved to Iowa City for his subspecialty training in pulmonary and critical care at the University of Iowa.

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Moy remained at the University of Iowa on faculty between 1994-2005 and tenured in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. In 2005 Dr. Moy left his faculty position to co-found Cellular Engineering Technologies (CET), a pro-life biotech company in Coralville, IA. In 2006, Dr. Moy founded the John Paul II Medical Research Institute a non-profit research institute devoted toward the use of adult stem cells for treating orphan diseases, degenerative neurological diseases, regenerative medicine and cancer. He also maintained a private practice in Pulmonary Medicine including outreach to distant underserved areas in eastern Iowa.

Herb Berger, MD, clinical professor in Pulmonary, Critical Care, & Occupational Medicine, wrote of Moy:

He was a great dad and husband.

A deeply devoted and faithful individual who never took the easy way.

He was a pioneer in his love of research and trying to find successful ways to treat devastating diseases with stem cells that were not of embryonic stem cell origin.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, April 13, 2024, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City, followed by a lunch reception and time of visitation prior to burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the John Paul II Medical Research Institute.
