Zeitler assumes role as Section Chief of Hematology/Oncology at the VA

The following announcement comes from Dr. Brad Dixon, Professor of Internal Medicine and Chief of Medicine, VA Health Care System.

It is with great pleasure I announce that Dr. William Zeitler has accepted the position as Section Chief for Hematology/Oncology at the Iowa City VA. Dr. Zeitler is a native of Iowa City. He received his MPH, MD, a residency in Internal Medicine, and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology all from the University of Iowa. He is currently clinical assistant professor of Internal Medicine in Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the Carver College of Medicine. He is deeply committed to the care of our veterans and has spent most of his time as a staff physician at the Iowa City VA. During his training he has been a very active member in many University Committees and has been awarded the Thomas J. Parsons Award in Internal Medicine and the Carver College of Medicine Distinguished Student Service Award, as well as being a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Dr. Zeitler has specific interest in lung cancer and will help lead clinical studies as well as the Lung Cancer Screening program at the Iowa City VA. He is highly regarded by his colleagues and staff as a compassionate and skilled clinician. We look forward to his leadership of the Hem/Onc Section.

Dr. Zeitler will take the reins from Dr. Chandrikha Chandrasekharan. We wish to thank Dr. Chandrasekharan for her over five years of service to the ICVA. She and her colleagues have had to contend with a chronic shortage of Hem/Onc providers at the ICVA, but despite this have managed to provide outstanding and timely clinical service for cancer and hematology services (nearly 100% of patients seen within 30 days of the requested appointment date), despite the challenges of COVID-19 and provider shortages. Dr. Chandrasekharan will work mostly at University of Iowa Health Care, but will continue to provide occasional services at the Iowa City VA.

Please give both Will and Chandrikha thanks for their hard work and leadership of this vital service to our veterans!
