Meet your Interns 2024, part 5

We are proud to present the incoming Intern Class of 2024. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a month or so, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We will introduce them a few at a time each week for the next couple months. Welcome to Iowa!

Madison Bellamy, MD

Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri

Medical school: University of Missouri-Columbia

“Why Iowa”: Iowa had everything I was looking for, from fellowship opportunities to staying close to family in the Midwest. My interview day cemented things for me as everyone was so kind and welcoming.

What I like about Iowa City: I am a big foodie and already have a long list of restaurants to try. So far, my favorite has been sharing charcuterie boards and a bottle of wine with friends and family at Brix cheese and wine bar.

Sahand Golestan, MD

Hometown: Tehran, Iran; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Sacramento, California

Medical school: Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University

“Why Iowa”: In addition to excellent, well-rounded training, what drew me to UIHC was the strong sense of community— palpable even through virtual interviews—and how easy it was to build a genuine connection with everyone I met. I could tell pretty quickly that UIHC was a special place and wanted to be surrounded by residents, faculty, and mentors that are as inspiring as they are kind.

What I like about Iowa City: Iowa City itself has a unique charm, perfectly balancing serenity and adventure, and a wonderful place to build community.

Caitlin Mechtly, MD, PharmD

Hometown: Dallas City, Illinois

Medical school: Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine

“Why Iowa”: It just felt right! All of my interactions seemed sincere. I got a sense that residents and faculty alike would push me to be a better person—and a great physician.

What I like about Iowa City: The variety of family-friendly activities and there always seems to be a slight breeze—even the hot days are pretty pleasant!

Anika Mittal, MD

Hometown: Blytheville, Arkansas

Medical school: University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine

“Why Iowa”: I was truly drawn by the people at our program. My biggest takeaway from my interview was the camaraderie among the residents and how the faculty really took the time to know me and the values that drive me. I could tell that the program really cares about supporting me and my goals as a person. This was even more evident when everyone shared their “Iowa” stories and they also had a consistent theme for why they stayed—the people. I knew Iowa was the supportive program I sought that will train me to be the best physician I can, in a welcoming and encouraging environment all the way through.

What I like about Iowa City: I love that Iowa City has the small-town feel, similar to my hometown, where you can get anywhere in 15 minutes, but also has anything and everything I could be looking for. It’s even better when everyone is so kind and willing to share recommendations for places all the time. I’m personally also looking forward to continuing to visit all of the kayaking spots in the area these next few years. Lake McBride is so close, and such a nice change in scenery.
