We are proud to present the incoming Intern Class of 2024. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a month or so, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We will introduce them a few at a time each week for the next couple months. Welcome to Iowa!
Hometown: Dubuque, Iowa
Medical school: University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine
“Why Iowa”: As a native Iowan, I look forward to the opportunity to care for complex patients from across the state. The faculty here are supportive and enthusiastic about training the next generation of physicians.
What I like about Iowa City: Iowa City is a unique blend of small-town charm and vibrant university life. People here are kind and open-minded. FilmScene, Deluxe Bakery, and Waterworks Prairie Park are a few of my favorite places.
Halimah Hamidu-Egiebor, MD, MBA
Hometown: Bronx, New York
Medical school: Central Michigan University
“Why Iowa”: I really appreciated the rigorous training offered at Iowa. As a Med-Psych resident, I was looking for a program that offered me comprehensive training in both areas of training and the University of Iowa definitely accomplishes this.
What I like about Iowa City: I have enjoyed exploring downtown and going to the farmers market.
Hometown: Prairie Village, Kansas
Medical school: University of Kansas
“Why Iowa”: My wife (a Pediatrics intern) and I just had a good feeling about the program. Everyone from the residents to the program directors made us both feel welcomed, and that we would feel supported in our training here.
What I like about Iowa City: All the festivals and city-wide events seemingly every week here makes getting connected with the community a breeze. They also have many great state and local parks very close by to be outside and enjoy nature! We are excited to be a part of Hawkeye Football this fall!
Hometown: Pleasant Hill, Missouri
Medical school: University of Missouri – Columbia
“Why Iowa”: I was looking for an academic institution in the Midwest that not only provided high-quality education but also supported residents in their career development and maintained a healthy academic culture among peers and faculty. Additionally, everyone here has been incredibly kind and welcoming. There is a strong sense of community here that makes it ideal for personal and professional growth!
What I like about Iowa City: Iowa City is well-maintained and very bike-friendly, making it easy to get around with plenty of paths and trails to explore. Downtown is also lively and has a lot to offer, and the city has a charming small-town feel that truly rallies behind its university sports teams!
Hometown: Irvine, California
Medical school: Medical College of Wisconsin
“Why Iowa”: I was looking to train at a big academic referral center with a wide breadth of exposure to pathology ranging from your typical “bread/butter” cases to undifferentiated “zebras” that would set a strong foundation for the rest of my career in anesthesia/critical care medicine. As the only academic center serving the state of Iowa, UIHC immediately stood out to me!
What I like about Iowa City: My co-residents! +finding new Herky sculptures around the city, cute thrift shops, Wilson’s Orchard, and living walking-distance from Trader Joe’s.
