Meet your Interns 2024, part 8

We are proud to present the incoming Intern Class of 2024. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a month or so, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We will introduce them a few at a time each week for the next couple months. Welcome to Iowa!

Emily Entz, MD

Hometown: Traverse City, Michigan; Bozeman, Montana

Medical school: University of Washington

“Why Iowa”: The Internal Medicine residency program at UIHC is truly an exceptional program that fosters a supportive environment. In just a few short months, I’ve experienced the genuine commitment from faculty and co-residents to provide top-notch clinical education and professional growth.

What I like about Iowa City: I love the sense of community in Iowa City. The blend of college-town energy and small-town charm make it a unique and welcoming environment. Plus, plenty of beautiful parks for some Midwest running!

James Eyer, MD

Hometown: Knoxville, Tennessee

Medical school: Meharry Medical College

“Why Iowa”: Iowa appealed to me for multiple reasons. The biggest was the culture of the individuals attracted to the program. The friendly and positive environment permeated through the lens of Zoom and it was clear that the people here were happy to be part of the Iowa family. Looking back now I know I was correct and I’m ecstatic to be surrounded by the supportive and nurturing educational environment.

What I like about Iowa City: I love the life I’m building here with my soon-to-be wife. I deeply enjoy the city’s culture and atmosphere and look forward to continuing my residency and training here.

Peter Sanchez, MD

Hometown: Fort Pierre, South Dakota

Medical school: University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine

“Why Iowa”: I was attracted to residency here for the people and the ability to train in a world-class ophthalmology program. The people are what make Iowa great. Throughout medical school and during my interview process,  I was constantly reminded of how supportive the faculty at Iowa are and how they want to see you become an excellent doctor. The faculty supported me through the process of attempting to match in the same place as my wife (an orthodontics resident) and they did everything they could to promote our success. It was an easy choice to stay in Iowa.

What I like about Iowa City: I love the small-town feel and how I am never far from the outdoors. Whether it be hunting, fishing, canoeing, or hiking with my wife/friends, there is always something for me to do outdoors. I also love the restaurant scene in Iowa city and feel like most cuisines are represented.

Juno Sung, MD

Hometown: Seoul, South Korea

Medical school: University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine

“Why Iowa”: Iowa was the first state I stepped my foot on when I immigrated to the States. It did not take long to fall in love with the community and the people. I feel the need to give back to the community that was so good to me; that’s why I chose UIHC, to continue learning more about the unique cultures and deep history of Iowa in order to become a practicing physician here.

What I like about Iowa City: I love Iowa in general, the VERY distinct four seasons plus the quietness and kindness is a good mix. For Iowa City specifically, I love the delicate balance between diversity and calmness.
