Meet your Interns 2024, part 9

We are proud to present the incoming Intern Class of 2024. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a month or so, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We are pleased to announce the final group of interns below. Welcome to Iowa!

Mahmoud Dibas, MBBS

Hometown: Amman, Jordan; Tulkarm, Palestine

Medical school: Sulaiman Alrajhi University, Saudi Arabia

“Why Iowa”: I was initially attracted to UIHC for its long-standing reputation in neurology, particularly in stroke and neurointervention. During my research fellowship, I witnessed the program’s commitment to resident growth through abundant patient care and teaching opportunities in a high-volume facility with a large catchment area, helping residents develop into well-rounded neurologists. Combined with the CNS-TP program and excellent research mentorship, UIHC provides the perfect environment for me to pursue a career as a physician-scientist.

What I like about Iowa City: Iowa City is a lively small college town that uniquely blends the charm of a tight-knit community with the opportunities of a larger city. Its friendly people and welcoming atmosphere have made me feel at home, and I am excited to be part of the Hawkeye family!

Amanda Janquart, MD

Hometown: Oak Creek, Wisconsin

Medical school: Medical College of Wisconsin

“Why Iowa”: I appreciate the collaborative learning environment and breadth of exposure while still being a drive away from home.

What I like about Iowa City: Perks of a small city with a variety of cultural events and outdoor activities to enjoy in my free time.

Trevor Simmons, MD

Hometown: Genoa, Illinois

Medical school: University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago

“Why Iowa”: I was drawn to the University of Iowa for residency because of the excellent academic training at a well-known medical center, the positive and welcoming interactions I had on interview day, and the chance to be close to home while learning in a supportive environment.

What I like about Iowa City: I enjoy the beautiful walking and hiking trails, the lively community events, and exploring local favorites like Wilson’s Orchard and Deluxe Cakes & Pastries.
