The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to introduce some of the faculty members and APPs who joined us between May and September 2024 (start dates in parentheses). We are happy to welcome them to the department.
April Allen, PA-C (7/1/24)
April Allen joined the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine as a Physician Assistant, where she will see patients in the Occupational Health clinic at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center on First Avenue in Iowa City. April began practice at UI Health Care in Urgent Care. She received an MS in Biomedical Sciences at Regis University in Denver, CO, followed by her MPAS from the Carver College of Medicine. In her free time, she enjoys cheering on the Hawkeyes and spending time with friends and family.
Ahmad Arham, MD (7/29/24)
Dr. Ahmad Arham joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as an Instructor from a faculty position at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He received his MBBS from the Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, followed by an internal medicine residency at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, where he also completed a cardiovascular medicine fellowship. In addition, Dr. Arham completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at West Virginia University, followed by a peripheral vascular interventions fellowship at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, CT. As a member of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Arham’s duties will include inpatient consult service, outpatient clinic, procedures in the catheterization lab, teaching, and a share of on-call responsibilities at UI Health Care’s downtown campus. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family.
Nicole Fedele, MSN, ARNP (5/24/24)
Nicole Fedele joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation as a Nurse Practitioner, where she will see patients in the Cancer Services clinic in the Quad Cities. She received her MSN from the University of Illinois at Chicago-Quad Cities Campus. Outside of work, Nicole enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and taking walks.
Lily Ganz, PA-C (8/30/24)
Lily Ganz joined the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine as a Physician Assistant, where she cares for patients in the MICU. She received her MS from Boston University School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant program, and completed an emergency medicine PA residency at Regions Hospital in St Paul, MN. She enjoys learning and using POCUS in her practice. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her dog Milo, cooking, traveling, sailing, getting outside hiking or snowboarding, and exploring local coffee shops and restaurants.
Danita Harrison, MSN, DNP, CDE, ARNP (8/30/24)
Dr. Danita Harrison joined the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as a Nurse Practitioner, where she sees patients primarily at UI Health Care in the Bettendorf/Quad Cities area. She received an MSN from Bradley University in Peoria, IL; an FNP from University of Illinois at Chicago; and has a DNP from Concordia University-Wisconsin in Mequon. Dr. Harrison likes to spend her free time on her 100-year-old family farm raising black Angus cattle, and enjoys making sugar art.
Waleed Hassan, MBBCh (8/13/24)
Dr. Waleed Hassan joined the Division of Nephrology as a Clinical Assistant Professor from his Internal Medicine residency at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He received his MBBCh from Minia University Faculty of Medicine in Minia, Egypt, followed by an Internal Medicine residency. Dr. Hassan also completed a renal research fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, as well as a Clinical Renal Fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis. Afterward, Dr. Hassan completed an academic/research fellowship at UTHSC and a Glomerular Disease Fellowship at GlomCon. His clinical and research interests involve acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, dialysis, hypertension, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and interventional nephrology. In his free time, he likes to bike, play soccer (midfielder/playmaker), play table tennis, watch Premier League games (Liverpool FC fan), and travel.
Ram Katpally, MBBS, MPH (7/1/24)
Dr. Ram Katpally joins the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor, having just finished an advanced lung disease and transplantation fellowship here at the University of Iowa. He received his MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India, followed by an internal medicine residency at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. Dr. Katpally also completed a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY. His clinical and research interests focus on lung transplant and pulmonary hypertension. In his free time, he likes to think about how to achieve world peace, but until this lofty goal is reached, Ram reads books about dragons and magic. He begrudgingly also spends time with his beautiful daughter and wife.
Gulsen Ozen, MD (8/12/24)
Dr. Gulsen Ozen joins the Division of Immunology as a Clinical Assistant Professor from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She received her MD from Marmara University School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey, followed by an internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship in Turkey. She relocated to the United States at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for a research fellowship, which led to several publications and research talks at international meetings. She later completed an internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center as well. Dr. Ozen’s research and clinical interests include systemic sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Outside the hospital, Dr. Ozen enjoys spending time and traveling with her family and friends.
Vikram Sharma, MBBS (7/1/24)
Dr. Vikram Sharma joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as an Instructor. He completed his MBBS from Seth GS Medical College in Mumbai, India. Subsequently, he undertook further medical training in England, including core medical training from London Deanery (UK). Dr. Sharma was awarded a doctorate (MD-Res) from University College London (UK) for his research on novel signaling pathways in myocardial conditioning against reperfusion injury. He completed an internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic, followed by fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology from the University of Iowa. His clinical interests include complex coronary disease and chronic total coronary occlusions (CTOs). His research interests include acute ischemia-reperfusion injury of the heart, ischemic preconditioning, cardiac biomarkers and coronary disease/CTOs.
Roger Struble, MD (7/1/24)
Dr. Roger Struble joins the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine as an Instructor from his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Iowa. He received his MD from University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, followed by an internal medicine residency at the University of Iowa, where he also served a year as Chief Resident. Dr. Struble’s research and clinical interests include critical care medicine, implementing advanced monitoring techniques for evaluating processes of care, improving diagnostic accuracy, and exploring risk factors for delays in care. Outside the hospital, Dr. Struble enjoys spending time with his wife Emily and two daughters, playing soccer, and supporting the local arts.
Marta Tejedor Bravo, MD, PhD, MSc (7/1/24)
Dr. Marta Tejedor joins the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a Clinical Associate Professor from her position as Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Hospital Universitario Infanta Elena in Valdemoro, Madrid, Spain. She received her medical degree from Autónoma University School of Medicine, followed by an MSc from Alcalà de Henares University, both in Madrid. She completed specialized training in gastroenterology at Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal in Madrid, a fellowship in liver transplant at Saint James University Hospital in Leeds, England. She subsequently earned a PhD in medicine from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. Dr. Tejedor Bravo’s clinical and research interests involve advanced cirrhosis and its complications, in particular hyponatremia; and gender disparities in access to liver transplantation. She enjoys doing fun things with her family, like taekwondo, bike riding, arts and crafts, or watching movies.
Amr Wahba, MBBCh (8/19/24)
Dr. Amr Wahba has joined the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as a Clinical Assistant Professor after completing his fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism here at the University of Iowa. Dr. Wahba received his MBBCh from the University of Alexandria Faculty of Medicine in Alexandria, Egypt, followed by an internal medicine residency at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, as well as a fellowship in autonomic disorders at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Dr. Wahba’s clinical and research interests focus on general endocrinology and neuroendocrinology disorders. In his spare time, he likes to jog and kickbox.

Thomas Wright, MD (7/1/24)
Dr. Thomas Wright joined the Division of Infectious Disease in July after completing his infectious disease fellowship at the University of Iowa. Dr. Wright earned his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN. This was followed by internal medicine residency at Summa Health System/Northeast Ohio Medical University Program in Akron, OH. His clinical interest is general infectious disease, and his research interests are focused in antimicrobial stewardship. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring Iowa City with his wife, going to Iowa football games, and bird photography.
