In recognition of its tradition of exemplary scholarly activity, the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) held its annual Celebration of Excellence in Research, Scholarship, Teaching, and Service on Monday, adding faculty with appointments in the Department of Internal Medicine to its Wall of Scholarship, naming Impact Scholars, and presenting Faculty Awards. Peter Snyder, MD, associate dean for faculty affairs and development, and Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH, vice president of medical affairs and the Tyrone D. Artz Dean of the UI CCOM, hosted the event.

The Wall of Scholarship awards current CCOM faculty who are first or senior authors of published research articles that have made a significant impact in biomedical science, specifically for those papers that have been cited 1,000 or more times via Google Scholar, Scopus, and the Web of Science. In the 2024 calendar year, a publication from M. Bryant Howren, PhD, MPH, associate professor in General Internal Medicine, received this distinction. Ten current or former faculty members in the department have achieved this distinction, some for multiple publications.
Impact Scholars are selected based on the Hirsch index, also known as the H-index, which represents the number of research papers a faculty member has published, and the papers’ impact as determined by how many times they have been cited by other scientists and scholars in subsequent research articles.
Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are faculty who have achieved H-index scores of 100 or higher (“gold” level) and 50 or higher (“silver” level).
The following Internal Medicine faculty achieved Impact Scholar silver-level distinction during the 2024 calendar year:
![]() Eric Hoffman, PhD Professor of Radiology, Biomedical Engineering, and Internal Medicine |
![]() Richard J. Smith, MD Professor of Otolaryngology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, and Anatomy and Cell Biology |
![]() Barry London, MD, PhD Professor of Internal Medicine and Molecular Physiology and Biophysics |
These three join a growing list of researchers, nearly thirty now, within our department to earn this achievement. Congratulations to these outstanding scholars on the tremendous impact their work has made and this well-deserved recognition.
