GI recognizes Johlin retirement

After more than 4 decades of service to the patients, trainees, and faculty colleagues at University of Iowa Health Care, Frederick Johlin, MD, is hanging up his scope. To honor his contributions, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology hosted an open house in their workroom behind the James A. Clifton Digestive Health Center. Division Director David Elliott, MD, PhD, spoke briefly about what Johlin has meant both to him and to the division.

They then presented Johlin with a volume assembled by one of the clinicians. The book is filled with photos of Johlin from over the years, details of his accomplishments, including teaching awards like the 2021 Summers award, and with printed homages from colleagues.

The break room was soon overwhelmed with visiting well-wishers who wanted a photo with their long-time friend and colleague. In addition to the cake and refreshments, attendees took their turn to congratulate and thank Johlin personally. The line was long.

Over the years, I brought assorted questions to you about operating room patients. You always made time to answer, and always had time for teaching. I have saved an H&P note that you wrote just to remind me the importance of attention to detail. Thank you! Alan Ross, Anesthesia
