Engagement and Belonging in Medicine – July 2025

July marks an exciting time of transition and new beginnings at University of Iowa Health Care, as we welcome many new trainees and colleagues into our community. It’s also a powerful moment to introduce them to the WE CARE values—Welcoming, Excellence, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Empowerment—that drive our shared mission of Changing Medicine. Changing Lives. I’ve had the privilege of practicing and witnessing these values in action every day during clinical care. Yet, one standout example that showcase the welcoming nature of Iowans is the annual RAGBRAI  (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) event.

Each year, at the end of July, RAGBRAI draws thousands of cyclists from around the country to journey across Iowa. More than just a ride, it’s a celebration of hospitality, unity, and community spirit. Towns across the state come together to greet riders with open arms, delicious meals, and local festivities. Having participated in RAGBRAI myself a couple of times, I can say it’s an unforgettable experience, and a shining example of what makes Iowa special.

As we reflect on the power of coming together, we invite you to join in meaningful initiatives that make a real difference right here at home. This includes supporting the blood and platelet drive at the DeGowin Blood Center, a vital resource that saves lives every day. You can also take part in the Summer Food Drive Competition benefiting the UIowa Food Pantry—look for the collection bin located in the Medical Alumni Auditorium. Additionally, we’re proud to share that the Department of Medicine will once again partner with UI ARC, Family and Community Resources, FilmScene, and other community organizations to host an Overdose Awareness Day event. This year’s gathering will feature a screening of the film Beautiful Boy, providing a powerful space to reflect, remember those we’ve lost, and highlight stories of recovery and hope. Mark your calendars for the evening of September 9thThese small yet impactful opportunities allow us to stand together, strengthen community ties, and foster the human connection that is at the heart of our work and mission.

“Run for Your Liver, Run for Your Life” 5K
