Meet your Interns 2025, part 7

We are proud to present this year’s incoming interns. We wanted to take the opportunity to go a little past the names and faces and learn a couple things about them. We asked them each to tell us about why they chose Internal Medicine at Iowa for their residency. And, now that they have been here a couple months, what they like about living in Iowa City or working at University of Iowa Health Care. We will introduce them a few at a time each week for the next couple months. Welcome to Iowa!

Alina Husain, MD

Hometown: West Des Moines, Iowa

Medical School: Weill Cornell Medical College

“Why Iowa”: I wanted to train at an institution known not only for its exceptional training, but also for its culture—Iowa faculty, staff, and residents are incredibly talented and supportive, and after my interview day, I knew that was the type of environment in which I wanted to grow and train.

What I like about Iowa City: Iowa City is a vibrant city that attracts people from all backgrounds to its university and hospitals and clinics. I’ve already made great friends, and I really appreciate the welcoming and friendly attitude of people in Iowa City and the surrounding area. In addition, I enjoy biking along the Iowa River Trail.

Harshavardhan Nalam, MD

Hometown: Peoria, Illinois

Medical School: University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine

“Why Iowa”: I was drawn to the University of Iowa because it offers the balance I was looking for—excellent academic training within a close-knit and supportive community. During my interview, I felt that the faculty truly connected with me, making the experience feel personal and genuine. That warmth, combined with the program’s strong reputation and diverse clinical opportunities, reassured me that this is a place where I could grow into a compassionate and capable physician.

What I like about Iowa City: I love being able to run into someone I know, despite not knowing many people yet, any time that I go out into the city. There is a warm sense of community both with UIHC and Iowa City.

Daniel Pape, MD, PhD

Hometown: Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Medical School: UI Carver College of Medicine

“Why Iowa”: Iowa is committed to developing physicians who provide the best possible patient care. While I was a medical student at Iowa, the residents, fellows, and faculty always took time to teach, answer questions, and provide professional and personal mentorship. Combined with many clinical and research opportunities, Iowa was the right choice for me.

What I like about Iowa City: Iowa City is an easy place to live. Everything important to me is within 15 minutes (church, grocery store, parks, etc.). The people are also friendly. What more could you ask for?

Reiker G. Ricks, MD

Hometown: Rexburg, Idaho

Medical School: University of Utah School of Medicine

“Why Iowa”: I loved my interview and really connected with the faculty and residents. I also knew Iowa would be a great place to raise my kids.

What I like about Iowa City: It really reminds me of my hometown. I was raised on a farm in an agricultural community but my hometown also had a large university. I love the combination of being in a rural setting but also having the amenities that being near a large university provides.

Eva Wetzel, MD

Hometown: Omaha, Nebraska

Medical School: University of Nebraska Medical Center

“Why Iowa”: Iowa City seemed like a great fit for me since it was close to my family in Omaha, while still being a new adventure. Multiple friends and family had glowing things to say about Iowa City and the University. Also, as an undergraduate English major, I have to shout out the fact that Iowa City is a UNESCO City of Literature!

What I like about Iowa City: The people of Iowa City have been exceptionally kind and welcoming. Also, living in a “college town” always makes life more vibrant. It’s a great mix of cozy and cosmopolitan! I have really enjoyed the farmer’s markets, coffee shops, bus service, and libraries that the city has to offer—and the fantastic options for walking and cycling. I look forward to attending the festivals throughout the year.
