2026–27 Chief Residents Announced

The following is a statement from Vice Chair for Education and Internal Medicine Residency Program Director Manish Suneja, MD.

It is with great pride that I announce the 2026–27 Chief Residents for the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

The Chief Residents are chosen for their leadership skills, moral integrity, and clinical acumen and are the most representative faces of the Internal Medicine Residency Program for the year. The Chief Residency represents the largest investment in leadership made by the Department, but the return on this investment is immeasurable.

This year, we are excited to introduce a new Ambulatory Chief Resident position, underscoring our commitment to excellence in outpatient education. The inaugural Ambulatory Chief Resident will be Amanda Chang, MD. In this role, Amanda will work very closely with Krista Johnson, MD, MME, the Ambulatory Associate Program Director, to develop and implement ambulatory educational initiatives for the residency program, serve as a mentor in outpatient clinic setting, and help lead the primary care pathway.

We look forward to our Chief Residents serving as teachers, role models, and colleagues to our residents. Please join us in congratulating Cameron, Amanda, Maluki, Ashten, and Trisha on their success! We look forward to their leadership.

Cameron Brownlee, MD
I have envisioned applying for chief since being an intern at Iowa. I am overwhelmed with the opportunity to serve as chief at a program with mentors, colleagues, and friends I cherish so dearly. Our past and current chiefs have played a vital role in molding myself and my peers into competent and compassionate physicians. I aspire to continue to motivate the next generation of internists to achieve the same characteristics. I hope to continue our remarkable focus on clinical education and our exceptional culture and collegiality.

Amanda Chang, MD

I am honored to be selected as one of the rising Chief Residents for the 2026-27 academic year. Iowa has an outstanding Internal Medicine Residency Program with a tradition of superb clinical education and experience along with a welcoming and collaborative environment. I am incredibly grateful for my training here, as it has played a pivotal role in shaping me into the clinician I am today. I hope to continue Iowa’s tradition of clinical and academic excellence with a special focus on improving the ambulatory curriculum and integrating technology in education.

Maluki Radford, MD

I am thrilled to serve as Chief Resident for Quality and Safety during the 2026–2027 academic year. Throughout my residency, our program has consistently fostered my clinical development, professional growth, and most importantly my personal wellbeing. The chief residents who came before me were a direct extension of that supportive culture, offering mentorship, advocacy, and encouragement. In this role, I look forward to continuing that legacy by championing our residents and contributing to a culture of excellence and safety.

Ashten Sherman, MD

I am beyond excited and grateful to have been allowed the privilege to serve as a Chief Resident for our Internal Medicine program in 2026-2027. I have been afforded incredible opportunities and had exemplary mentors during my time at Iowa who have helped craft me into the physician I am today—something I hope to continue to pay forward. I am excited to share and brag about the amazing culture, opportunities, and people our residency program offers with potential applicants, and I hope to take what I’ve learned from our incredible program leaders, residents, and past Chief Residents to work to advocate for our current residents and continue to better and grow our program in the coming years.

Trisha Slehria, MD

I am incredibly grateful and humbled to be selected as a chief resident for the University of Iowa Internal Medicine Residency—a place that has been not only a phenomenal environment for learning but also where I have built lasting friendships and connections. I am excited for the opportunity to give back to the program by supporting the positive, collaborative, and academically driven culture that makes our community special. In this role, I especially look forward to mentoring residents and medical students, growing as a leader, and working closely with my co-chief residents, faculty, and staff to continue strengthening our training environment. It’s an honor to serve in this position, and I am excited for what the future holds.
