Update in Infectious Diseases, 2024

Earlier this month, the Division of Infectious Diseases held its 25th annual Updates in Infectious Diseases CME event. This year the focus was built around infectious diseases in primary care, a helpful frame for the many local primary care physicians, nurses, and advanced practice providers who could bring this information back to their daily practices.

The day-long event was also noteworthy because it welcomed two former division members and UI Health Care leaders back to Iowa. Former ID Division Director Daniel Diekema, MD, MS, and former Hospital Epidemiologist Jorge Salinas, MD, traveled from opposite ends of the country (Maine and California, respectively). Each was invited to present at the conference, but also provided an opportunity for old friends and colleagues to catch up in person. Other out-of-state guests included Carl LeBuhn, MD, who has moderated the day-ending case presentations panel at this conference for decades.

After introductory remarks from course director Ben Appeheimer, MD, presentations were given on the following topics:

  • Pandemic Musings
    Jorge Salinas, MD
  • Syphilis: Resurgence of an Old Foe
George Walton, MPH, MLS(ASCP); Sarah A Auerbach, DO
  • Fever in Returning Traveler and Re-emergence of Tropical Disease in the US
    Judy Streit, MD

The afternoon was composed of three sets of breakout sessions covering the topics below, as well as a panel discussion of case presentations.

  • RSV in Kids: Epidemiology, Management, and Prevention
    Lukasz Weiner, MD
  • AI in Medicine: Utilizing ChatGPT as a Clinician
    Lemuel Benedict Non, MD
  • Role of Infection in Wound Healing
    Ambar Haleem, MD
  • HIV/STI Update for Primary Care
    Quanhathai Kaewpoowat, MD
  • Prevention is Primary: Immunization Update for 2024
Laura Czerniak, PharmD; Kelli S Christopher, PharmD
  • Histo, Blasto and Beyond: The Changing Landscape of Fungal Disease
    Daniel Diekema, MD
  • Meet the Professors ID Case Presentations
Moderator and Presenter: Carl LeBuhn, MD
Panelists: Patrick Kinn, PharmD; Lemuel Benedict Non, MD; Jorge Salinas, MD; Poorani Sekar, MD

For 25 years, the division and faculty have served the state and region by delivering a mix of critical information and community to area clinicians. Congratulations and thanks to the many organizers and presenters who have consistently delivered on both these missions.
