Rasmussen receives AHA seed grant

Tyler Rasmussen, MD, PhD, Cardiology fellow, received the American Heart Association’s Young Investigator Database Seed Grant to research in-hospital cardiac arrests in Medicare recipients. This grant provides Rasmussen access to the Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) database, a cardiovascular health database partially focused on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) data.

While in-hospital cardiac arrests are common and cause high rates of mortality, there’s little understanding of the hospital variation in the incidence of cardiac arrests. Rasmussen will compare the GWTG and the Medicare databases to determine the incidence of in-hospital cardiac arrests among Medicare recipients.

“Ultimately, this will help identify hospitals with exceptionally low in-hospital cardiac arrest rates,” Rasmussen said. “In the future, site-level analyses could be performed to determine how to lower the incidence of in-hospital cardiac arrest.”

In addition to access to GWTG, Rasmussen will receive up to $1,500 to attend AHA’s 2020 Scientific Sessions in Dallas, Texas, in November.
